The Heart of Light

The light swirls around her legs, up through her butterfly wings and out of her fingertips. She touches the tallest flower and it continues to grow. Together they stand in The Heart of Light.

Painting details: The little girl’s wings are partially transparent. The stem of the large flower is shaped into a heart at the little one’s feet. All the flowers come from the heart, all light is directed at the heart. There’s one small ladybug in the far right corner of the painting. And of course there’s a sunflower in her brown hair.

Commentary: Growing Into Scars

This is a follow up to the painting called PTSD.

This one illustrates how it is possible to move beyond the worst of the past. It is possible to have the flames behind you and to look to the future with hope and certainty. Every scar may not pass but once we learn to heal what we can and manage what we can’t true growth and true freedom will begin.
Life can be beautiful. Life will be beautiful.

Colour significance:
Green, for me, symbolizes growth as well as youth, it’s movement, it’s futuristic.

Why use green for flowing hair? It has always been said that a woman’s pride and glory is her hair. The best way I feel I can symbolize a willingness to grow and build up personal self worth is to make the hair green.

Significance of scars:
Many assume others can see their every flaw as if it were a scar right across their face.

I assume everyone can see my internal wounds the same as if scars covered my face.

In Version One, shown below, the woman is a little more relaxed. The scars on her face are leaves, droplets and flowers. If you look closely you can see a flower across her lips with a drop of dew which leads to a small heart on her neck.

Challenge Me

Since September of 2008 I’ve been trying my best to make handmade dolls. After I realized I can I wanted to see if I could sew something else. It surprises me when I accomplish something new. Perhaps a self esteem check is n order or maybe the check is when I’m finished and look at the product and think, “This is cute. I like this.”  I suppose the nature of a challenge, can I do this or can’t I? I think I’m driven to find out if I can which has lead me down many, many roads. Some I wish I hadn’t traveled down but others I’m happy I did.

A long time ago I tried experimenting with textures on canvas. I used saw dust for the texture mixed with acrylic paints. Can you say failed with a capital F? It was horrible. The finished product is hidden away but I’ll admit the process was fun. I don’t mind failing at things from time to time. Still, succeeding feels much better. Maybe the success story isn’t’ as funny as your roommate walking in to witness the floor covered in saw dust but still a success story is nice. Okay, moving on…….

This is one of the very first bears I’ve ever made. I believe this is the 2nd of four.

Cream Bear.Sweet Dolly Sue Rag Doll 20 inches

You can see the teddy bear sitting on the lap of my newest doll called Sweet Dolly Sue. She is very different from the others not just in size but in nature. This 20 inch whimsical homemade doll is sporting what use to be a lamp shade but is now a hat. She doesn’t mind though, just look at her heart shaped lips as they smile. The hat is removable for times she wants to show off her short curly black hair and bring more attention to her blue plaid overalls and little velvet navy blue shoes. What of her eyes? The look in her eye is innocent and playful. Wide eyed blues, I call them.

Both the doll and the bear are available in my Etsy shop and are sold separately.

Where Do I Go With This?

These two paintings are based on an original sketch is called “I Can Forgive You”. After several digital alterations that title no longer fits. I’m just calling it Blue Flower for now because the lady is holding a blue flower. You may also notice in the original sketch there’s a figure supporting the larger body who is holding two heads. When I did the digital alteration I chose to leave the two smaller heads, one lighter and one darker. Sunflowers represent multiple lives within one head. They swirl and bump into one another, tangling, twisting, forever moving but they cannot disturb her as she seeks to find her center.

Here are two different versions of an original sketch called ‘I Can Forgive You.”

I have no idea if I’ll continue to work on this digitally or not, thus the entry title, “Where Do I Go With This?”
