Winter Plans
Friday, November 24, 2006-11:42AM EST
I, like many others, react to the lack of sun during the winter months. They call this wonderful time seasonal depression, I call it a frikin season to cry, moan and long for the sun to come back. Sun come back please show your face! Well, this year I have a plan. I’ve been stocking up on books and cheap DVD’s so that when the coldest days hit I won’t sit here at home with nothing at all to do. I don’t go on book marathons and read a book a day. I take my time because I’m not trying to set some kind of record so I can jump on the net and say, Oh I devoured 6 books last night but I can’t tell you nare a word of them. Anyway, this winter has one major difference from past winters. I’ll have full use of the fireplace with an abundant supply of fire wood and and overflow of books and DVD’s. Goodwill has DVD’s on sale for about $3.00 each so I’ve been picking them up during the half price tag days. Gotta love a good sale, especially when it involves the wonder Latin lover Antonio Banderas with his beautiful brownness or chocolate hunka hunka burnin’ love Mr. Denzel Washington. Then of course we have to toss in a bit more Latin love with the Latin American born Joaquin Phoenix or Sir Scottish Sensation Shaun Connery. Cheap movies bringing sexy guys, you can’t do better than that. So, I’ve stocked up. Heck, I even got a few movies with the Gladiator himself in it for $1.50. Goodwill, always doing right by the common man woman. The man who made bald sexy, Jon Luc Picard, even finds himself among the movies I picked up.
So here is a short list of only some my cheap thrills:
Master and Commander -New Zealand born Australian raised, Russell Crowe gets wet
Bone Collectors -Milk does a body good, milk did you right Denzel
Once Upon A Time In Mexico -Latin Lover Antonio and Johnny Depp. Oh Johnny!
Panic Room -Love me some Jody Foster
Godsend-Rebecca Romijn-Stamos stars with Greg Kinnear and Robert De Niro clone a child
Darkness Falls corny thriller about a murderous tooth fairy
Enough -Jay Lo kickin’ butt is always nice to see
Here is a short list of some of the recently purchased books for only 69 cents at the wonderful second hand store:
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden -paper back, original version of 1997 before it hit the big screen
The Color Purple - A must have for any half way decent collection of books
Great Expectations hard bound -I bought this because it’s a classic and it has both endings included
Cold by John Smolens – New to me, I’ve never read it.
The Night Spider by John Lutz- New to me, I’ve never read it
High Crimes (also a movie) by Joseph Finder- “”
If Tomorrow Comes by Sidney Sheldon – “”
The Program by Gregg Hurwitz- “”
The Kill Clause by Gregg Hurwitz – “”
Even though I’ve already read the book The Alienist by Caleb Carr I went ahead and picked it up again. The book and I have a little bit of history. I read it sitting in a steam bath apartment in Bowling Green, Kentucky where I had no TV, no phone and no car. That book kept me sane for about 2 days when Kentucky outdid hell fires heat factor. It was also directly after leaving my ex-husband so ya know, it was kind of a crazy sick sentimental type purchase. My goodness it was hot that year. I’d just moved in and had nothing to do. I can’t even remember how I got the book but I read it between cold showers and liked it. The author has serious issues so I haven’t read anything else of his. Well, that’s not true. He has another book called The Angel of Darkness but I only read about three chapters of it before high tailing it back to Barns and Noble to return it with the explanation that Caleb seems to be infatuated with the idea of killing “boy whores.” The cashier agreed that Mr. Carr is whacked and gladly returned my $8 and change. The man is a sick something-something but since The Alienist and I have history I went ahead and added it to my library. So between a heck of a lot of books and DVD’s listed and unlisted plus a fire place, a good recliner and some Natural Light bulbs I plan to make it through this winter without the blues snuffing out my joy, however small that joy is winter can’t have it. No snow is gonna freeze my joy I mean to tell ya, not with my boys Antonio and Brown Sugar Denzel to keep me warm. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
December 2nd Goodwill will have another half off day store-wide so I don’t have to pick and choose from the color of the week discount on books or DVD’s. Books that normally cost 69 cents will be half off. I’ll be savin’ my pennies for December 2nd the Bookworm’s Holiday.

I read The Alienist several years ago, and though I don’t remember much of it, I do remember liking it a lot. The Color Purple, now that really is a must read. I like to go to my library when they have their book sales every 6 months or so. You can buy a brown grocery sack full of books (paperback, hardback) for $2. I usually get 2-3 bags full. If only a third of them turn out to be keepers, it’s well worth it. I’ve gotten some real gems this way.
I really liked “The Alienist,” too, and was disappointed in Caleb Carr’s second book. Don’t know if you’ve read anything by Joseph Finder yet, but I really like him. The first book of his that I read was “Paranoia,” and that made me want to get my hands on everything else he’s written.
You have some good titles there, both books and movies, to help you get through the dreary days.
Enjoy!
looks like you have a very good plan to combat the winter blues. my mom has battled with depression for most of her life, though its not the seasonal kind, its the all year kind. for her, dvd’s and books would probably lose their appeal, along with everything else.
i like winter, and its hard for me to envision being effected with depression by it. i get a little weary of all the white of snow after a bit… i rather prefer overcast days and wet, green foliage. but i can relate in a way, as i get very weary of the hehat and humid winds here in oklahoma during the long hot summers. for me, that is when its hardest to go out. and the sun nearly blinds me too. i guess i get the summer blues…eh heh heh.
i dont read alot, because mt attention span and dyslexia just dont work well together…but movies are a different story. i have seen all the ones on your list. good choices all!

ah my list… i really need to finish that…
yes i have overcome alot. and i work in a clinic, one that treats infectious disease. i set the appointments, take referals, and am the first person pts see when they come in, and the last person they see when they leave, typically.
as for destiny’s post, i didnt take as one to further hate and division at all, but as it was, an angry letter for havng a simple request blatantly ignored and violated for the enth time.
it did get me thinking, tho, i have to be honest. things tend to get over generalized pertaining to events like the whole migration from europe to america. not all the people who fled king whats his name came here and turned on the red man. but there are always those that do that sort of thing, and they get all the press, it seems. then everyone in that time frame becomes guilty by association. and not all the red men had a reason to kill white men in the very beginning. they just didnt want them there. there are more side this than most realize.
however, i am not one to consider skin color, except sometimes to identify someone i may be refering to, or to recognise cultural variances and particulars. for example, the beau is half native american, half italian. i call him pinky brown. although he looks white, he is really native red and latino. and he isnt mob realted, that i know of. i cant really confirm either way…(just kidding). i realize there are differences in the races, and their ensueing cultures. and subcultures.
gothic is a mostly white subculture. but only by default. its no exclusive club by any means. your question was so inocently posed i had to laugh! i thought iwas funny in a really cute way. im pretty hard to offend that way. but the way i wrote my post i can see why you asked…
i think i was gothic oriented from my childhood. always been attracted to style and all. there were no goths when i was in high school, only me. and yes, i wear black shadow and polish sometimes. but my style there is subdued. i do not wish to look like a woman trying to look like a teen. no thenk yew! i like the clothes tho! sort of mountain gypsy stuff. mideval mountain gypsy. sort of. i dont have a style of music anymore. too restricting. i like what i like. thats my genre now.
wow this comment is long. shouldve been an email or something… talky joe, thats me tonight! eh heh heh…
i hope you didnt feel targeted by that post. its been in my head a long time. i just needed to get it out, and the time and the place were just right….more talkie joe…
im going in the living room now…(nervous smile)

we went so far as to buy the “day” lights to battle the seasonal depression. It has been a very good investment for us from our point of view. Watch for them on sale, even if you just get one to use where you read it could help. We’re not so much an Antonio fan but we do like Denzel and Johnny Depp.
peace and blessings
