Hiccups and Carrots Support Group

It’s strange what brings people to this blog. I’ve seen search queries come in because someone was looking for a remedy for foot fungus. It’s frightening that whatever I said about feet and fungus brought them here but what is even more odd is how people that have a reaction to carrots come to my blog on an entry that has nothing at all to do with carrots or hiccups. And then they leave comments like, “I thought I was the only one.” So, since there are so many of you I figured that I’d bring you all together because clearly you need each other. We must all have support, even if it’s for something as odd as carrots and hiccups. So, here you are, an entry dedicated solely to people with your affliction. Now you can leave my other entry alone that talks about crazy people who don’t have your illness. I do find it strange not one of y’all left a blog link so you could find one another. You left it up to me to bring you together for carrots anonymous. So now Mavis and Ellie and Bugs B you are at last together. I’ve done my duty. Live well.

You’ve made the entry Still Exhausted - People Are Crazy! the most viewed on this blog at 399 times since I wrote it. I thank you for the clicks. I wish you the best in your hiccuping world. And as always, thank you for visiting Sundrip Journals.

Austin

Update: Since the writing of this entry it has been viewed more than a thousand times yet there is still no site set up for you guys to meet and “heal” from your carrots and hiccups affliction. The first step is admitting you have a problem but you must, Oh I say must, support one another. How can I truly understand where you’re coming from when I don’t suffer so? Won’t anyone step up and lead Carrots and Hiccups Anonymous?

Here are a few of the 15 comments from people who suffer with this carrot disorder. You can also visit them at the link above:

Barbarob Says: October 25th, 2006 at 10:55 pm I can’t believe this is as common a problem as it is! I just got some carrots out of the fridge and when I started hiccuping I ran to the computer determined to find out if other people have this issue. We should start a support group )
Mavis Says: August 14th, 2006 at 5:36 pm I thought I was the only person in the world that gets hiccups every time I eat raw carrots!!!
Ellie Says: September 25th, 2006 at 4:29 pm Everyone in my office thinks I’m crazy, I’m so glad you guys get carrot hiccups too!
Laura Says: October 7th, 2006 at 11:54 am I just did a google search for “carrot hiccups” and came up with this blog. After a 2 year-hiatus, my carrot-induced hiccups just came back. It’s trigged by any kind of carrots (cooked or raw). Sometimes I’ll even be eating a pureed soup and will identify carrots as one of the ingredients simply by the fact that I get the hiccups. I discovered this when a flute teacher told me to eat carrots to help my nerves before a performance… needless to say, this turned out to be a bad idea…
Bugs B Says: March 28th, 2007 at 10:12 pm I, too get carrot-related hiccups. Too bad, as I love them. I suspect it’s a lot more common than we think… who would ever admit to having them, or even thinking it was a common ailment?

Bugs B, is that really you? Oh my gosh it’s been so long…years in fact …. I haven’t watched your show since Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid. I’ve missed you so but I don’t remember you having the hiccups. Strange how we forget some stuff.

Love it! I get freaked out when I realise how people land on my blog….have to say I generally have people who realised that they landed by mistake though and leave again quietly.
So, having said that, I came here on purpose by a blogprint you left behind. And being here reading your comment I am glad I am not the only one :-) .

    OMG.

    Oh my…

I’m so glad I popped by tonight. After the session with my T, I needed a good laugh.

Oh yeah. I don’t hiccup when I eat carrots. In fact, I had carrots on my veggie sub today.

I had thought you were joking, so I clicked over to the other page… they really left those comments! That’s what made it really funny for me.

Now, I’ll be honest. I’d love it if the people who randomly hit on my blog would leave comments, but, um… are they serious?

Maybe you can take this as evidence that your blog speaks deeply to more than just people who have survived trauma (not meaning to diminish the trauma of carrot-induced hiccups, of course).

PS–I get hiccups after eating hard boiled eggs or pasta. Let’s see if that makes your stats even more interesting. :)

I dropped in to say hi and join the carrot-induced-hiccup support group. I do not have any link on my blog, unless carrots cause fiber-related buying frenzies (who knows? maybe it’s true). As far as carrots go, I find that if I eat them s-l-o-w-l-y, and chew very thoroughly, I can sometimes keep the hiccups from starting. I also get hiccups when I eat leftover turkey from the fridge. Go figure.

After eating a carrot and hiccuping, I immediately Googled “carrots hiccups” and found this site. It’s reassuring to know that others share my condition. Maybe we can start a foundation to raise awareness and finally find a cure. Godspeed carrot hiccupers. Godspeed.

  6. 6 Amy

I too get the hiccups from raw carrots, my fiance’ thinks I’m totally weird.

  7. 7 Dan

I also get hiccups after eating raw carrots. No issues after cooked carrots, though.

  8. 8 Samm Margera

ahaha, yeahh i thought i was allergic or something. how strange lots of people have this.

  9. 9 Patty

How bizarre. I too am sore afflicted, my friends. My husband thinks I’m coo-coo when I say raw carrots make me hiccup. I can’t imagine it’s allergies. What other allergy makes you hiccup? Anyway, the internets is a strange place, where one can find other coo-coo people–even if through the accidental connection of carrots and hiccups on a blog that has nothing to do with carrots and hiccups.

I heard Rocky Allen who is a DJ on WPLJ.95 in NY talking yesterday on the radio about how he always gets the hiccups when he eats raw carrots. After he said he has this problem, the radio station’s phones lines all lit up and he couldn’t believe it. People from all around were calling to let him know that they too, like us, have this afflication. Prior to hearing this, I thought I was the only one too! So, I googled “raw carrot hiccups” and found this blog. Thank God there are more of you out there! God Bless Us All …

You mean to tell me I didn’t get mentioned on the Radio Station? Argh!!! Nobody thought to plug The People Behind My Eyes? LOL :-)

After all the traffic that comes to this site for this one entry I thought I might try and figure out WHY you guys have this reaction. My assumption is that it has to do with a certain part of the carrot, something in it’s make up which causes a slight allergic reaction. I’ve been meaning to look this up.

    Thanks for dropping by
    Smiles to you and yours,
    Austin

I am so glad to find other people have the same problem I do! I was getting frustrated the other day because I eat carrots all the time and every time I get the hiccups. Finally I decided to Google it! It’s great to know I’m not alone, although I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Kinda sad to find that I might be allergic to them though. :::sigh:::

    Thanks!

    Amanda

At work, just got the hiccups after eating raw carrots, again…and since I was kid. So decided to google. Cooked carrots no problem.

  14. 14 serhan

Well guys believe it or not, just tonight I said’there should be other people who hiccup when they it raw carrots and hit this blog.I am from TURKEY,Europe and I sure do hiccup whenever I eat raw (not cooked or boiled) carrots.

  15. 15 Dan

I love raw carrots and yet every time on that very first bite I get hiccups… so of course like any geek would I Googled it.

Thanks for the site, good for a few laughs and even better to know it isn’t just me!

  16. 16 Nim

I get this too. With raw large carrot and baby carrots. I don’t think I get hiccups from shredded carrots at the salad bar. I’ll have to pay attention more next time. Certainly if the carrots are sliced and cooked I have not noticed any hiccups. The question is, is this a chemical or a physical thing that causes hiccups. Could it be just the shape of the carrot and the way you have to eat it that causes hiccups for some people? Do you all get hiccups from tiny pieces or shredded pieces? I like carrots but not the hiccuping part. I did find this page funny though. Member of CHC (carrot hiccup club).

  17. 17 jennie

haha… this is so random. don’t ask, why after all these years, i’ve decided to google “hiccups and carrots”. here i am stumbling across this site. who even knew this was such a common thing!?lmao! keep on eating carrots and hiccuping! :)

  18. 18 Robin

I get the hiccups whenever I eat raw baby carrots (no matter how much I chew or how small the pieces are). Some “grown up” carrots give me the hiccups, too, but I’ve found that really large, high quality organic carrots don’t. Its sooo weird. I’m happy to hear there are others out there!

  19. 19 Tina

I too get hiccups from raw carrots. Grated doesn’t seem to affect me or cooked ones. I thought I was the only one. It seems to happen mostly when I eat them without being cut up just snacking on them whole. Why is this so????????? I had some today and you guessed it hiccups.

  20. 20 Jonathan

I just googled carrots and hiccups and found this page. I get hiccups 100% of the time I eat raw carrots UNLESS I eat them really slowly.

  21. 21 allirock

Meeee toooo! As many of these other bloggers I googled why do I get hiccups every time I eat carrots! I told my husband and he thought I was crazy. So, I too am glad that I have someone to talk to about this now.

  22. 22 Lara

ME TOO! i googled ‘hiccups from carrots’ and tada! brought me here. so thankful i’m not going nutzo. i’m just one of many afflicted.

but i’m not gonna stop eating ‘em. nope. hiccup away! :D

  23. 23 Bubbit

SOOO FUNNY!! I was in the kitchen, took one bite of a baby carrot and the instant that first bite slid down my throat - INSTANT HICCUPS! This always happens to me, so I ran to the computer and googled it. … There are other’s like me!!! :) Too funny. Maybe carrots are too hard and crunchy so you swallow air or something when you eat them, which results in hiccups. HOO NOSE? :)

  24. 24 John

I’ve been getting carrot hiccups for years. Well my wife, Carol, decided to look it up and found your site.

I agree that there should be a site to support this odd affliction, and since I’m into blogging and have the carrot hiccups I’ll pick up the gauntlet and start the blog.

I just ordered the domain and am waiting for it to resolve. carrothiccups dot com will be up soon. Give it a few days.

Of course “The People Behind My Eyes” blog will have an honored spot in the links portion of the new Carrot Hiccups site.

So please drop buy and share.

i always get the hiccups while i am eating carrots! its been happening ever since i was young.

  26. 26 Litte Bunny Foo Foo

I TOO GET HICUCPS WHEN EATING CARROTS!!!!! I was eating some at work when I got the urge to google it and find out why I get them and the first link was to this blog. The hiccups I get are not noraml hiccups though, these are very loud and my body jumps violently. The sound is kind of like a very loud high pitched gasp for air. People laugh at me when it happens lol. Its funny but its kind of annoying cuz carrots are yummy. Some other foods do it to me too, if I even tough bread to my lips i hiccup but not sandwiches, just plain bread, strange huh?

  27. 27 Joe McLean

Me too. I munch some raw baby carrots and inevitably I get hiccups. It does not occur if the carrots are cooked, or from raw carrot juice. Has anyone considered pursuing scientific or medical research? This is sort of interesting.

  28. 28 Sarikka

Ok, this is great other people have this, but I need help, my problem is escalating…up until about two years ago I was fine, carrots no problem. Then I started developing an affliction to carrots, just didn’t really like them. Last year I started getting violent hiccups from raw carrots but not cooked ones. So, I started cooking carrots, because they’re good for you and easy, even if I don’t really like them anymore. Now, I just cooked some (with brown sugar and butter sounded good), and I think I’m going to throw up. What’s the matter with me? Has anyone else gotten worse like this? Help!

  29. 29 Austin

    Sarikka,
I think it’s safe to say you have an allergy to carrots not just a reaction with hiccups. I for one think you should kind of choose a different veggie, one that doesn’t threaten your well being ya know? I think I might see a nutritionist about this too. I’m not trying to be funny, I’m really not. The entry itself is written for the purpose of humor because of all the traffic I keep getting for this very subject but your situation seems a bit on the medical crisis side. You might want to contact your doctor and explain to him the extreme increase in symptoms. I’m sure he’ll tell you to stop eating carrots but you might want to know if there’s something else you need to do.
    Good luck
    Austin

Wow - my wife thought I was crazy… this happens to me too! Thanks for the support :-)
