Convicted In The Media

The perpetrator in this crime held a toddler by box cutter during a police standoff. After the police went in and safely removed the child they found the remains of another child who they believed to be a child missing for some two years. The child missing is the perpetrator’s child. The very next night’s news came on and said the identity of the remains is the child missing. I stopped to listen as the reporter went on to tell us that our criminal served time for child molestation as well as battery and a whole host of other crimes. Of course viewers were ready for justice. I mean come on, we’re about to take a child molester off the street again and we’re going to get him on murder charges. We’ll never see the likes of this guy again. The cornier then came on and said that the way the remains were stored mummified the body making cause of death easier to detect. He said it was heart wrenching to know the remains he examined belong to a child. Next they cut to the reporter who rattles off all the charges on the perp. He then said something that floored me. He said 100% accuracy for the identity of the child could take up to 2 weeks. The news report ended.

HANG ON! They took us through the entire news report, ripped our hearts out with the details of a child held by box cutter in a police stand off, showed the criminals face, listed off past crimes and told us the mummified body is his son. They all but assured his conviction right there in the media then said 100% accuracy of the remains would take up to two weeks. I apologize but um, how dare you wait until the end to say that? How dare you come on TV the very next day and say the remains were identified only later to tell us the accuracy of it won’t be final for two weeks? Yes, I want this man off Indiana streets. He needs to be gone BUT the question I have is this, how many times has inaccurate or partial information been given to us? This man is a worthless piece of $%*& but when you rip our hearts out with such details then tell us part of the details won’t be 100% confirmed for up to 2 weeks then I have a bit of a problem. You’ve contradicted yourself. You said the child is who you thought it was then you said you wouldn’t be sure for a little bit. I have issues with that.

One might think that just because this reporter gave such a bad report this time doesn’t mean he’s not accurate in other reports. I have a particular bad taste in my mouth for this reporter and have for quite a few years. I don’t like the man at all. I watch his news station because for me it’s the best one in the city. But he himself has questionable ethics. This one report alone isn’t the first where I left the TV thinking, “Boy, that doesn’t sound right.”

The other case he regularly reports on that makes me uncomfortable is the one where a family of 7 were shot dead in their home. Seven people in the same family died in one day. It was horrific. What bothers me is that they caught the men too fast and that while they were being held for these murders a family of 5 in the same neighborhood were shot only days after. This for me brings up questions. Why so fast? Did it have anything at all to do with President Bush’s wife being in the city the time of the murders? Did it have anything at all to do with pressure from the Mayor who happened to be walking in a rally supporting crime free neighborhoods? Did pressure bring those boys in? If you say you have no DNA linking them to this horrible crime and no eye witnesses why are you still willing to seek the death penalty? I do not think the boys in jail are innocent. I’ve heard of their life long criminal activities but it doesn’t mean they did this. If they did it prove it correctly. Don’t go on a hunch. Don’t convict them in the media. If you’re going to convict someone of a crime do it in a court with evidence, not on TV. I hope the news is correct in its conviction. I hope for justice sake they have the right boys because without a doubt they have already been convicted.

This particular man that held his toddler by box cutter in a police stand off is a person I want off the street. I never want to run into him or have my friends run into him. I want him convicted correctly. The point of me writing this is about accuracy of facts, trust and properly convicting someone. Guilty is fine, just do it right so the innocent don’t have to worry about technicalities. Just convict these people properly and give us a reason to trust in the justice system.
