The Rest of Her Life

Looking Forward

She said today is the first day of the rest of her life
As if something from yesterday faded away
And a new hope had been born.
As if today’s sunrise forever burned out midnight hours and
Melted cold hard tears that slowly fell down the window of her eyes.
Today is the first day of the rest of her life.
How could she know?
How can she be so sure?
Confident, tall, proudly she saunters across the alley way to the market where fresh peaches and spring flowers line the walk.
A smile crosses her face and is contagious to his.
“Today!” she says.
Today? He says.
“Yes, the rest of my life.”
So sure.
She’s sure.

Thank you for this poem, for it’s note of hope mingled with the reality of what is, and what is in the past.

    I really like this!

beautiful poem! i like it very much!
sorry to be so long getting back to you. ive been pretty busy - again. nice to know you think of sammy often. im sorry to let you know she passed saturday night. she wasnt ill, and had eaten a good dinner. she was warm and comfortable. i had long told her she had my permission to go when she was ready, and i wouldnt have her put down. when she went, it was fast, and she was in my arms, with the beau right there too. im sad, of course. but a little relieved too. she couldnt walk anymorwe from the neuropathy, and she endured subcu fluids three times a week. she was just ready, and she went. i thank God for the 18 years we had together.
