If you hear me complain about money this month it’s my own dang fault! Here’s what happened. You know how you see something you’ve been wanting for a bit but you didn’t get it because the price wasn’t right….by not right I mean free? Well, I didn’t get this for free but I did get it at about $350 off. That’s three hundred and fifty dollars off. I ended up getting a 37 gallon aquarium set up for $50.00. (This isn’t the aquarium here but an example of it. Please see my comment below.) I didn’t purchase the stand though but my roommate is building me a costume oak stand like it. He works with wood and is quite good so I have no doubts he can do it.
With the aquarium came the pump, filtration system, heater, rocks, large decorations and a pump to drain the tank when needed. I got the whole dang set up with a few plants even which is why I went ahead and paid the fifty bucks.
Today I cleaned the tank and rocks as well as the filtration system and everything else. It’s been full now for several hours but right now I’m just filtering the water and doing a few more things with the water. After a few days I’ll add the heater and leave it on for a few days then add the fish.
Remember these guys here? They’re getting big so they needed a new home which means their 37 gallons will work out wonderfully. Since they have such high ammonia output I shouldn’t add more than 3 but I’m not adding any but the two of them. I’ll add more plants later down the line and stuff like that but not more fish in the tank with them. The filtration system is a good one too. It’s for a 50 gallon tank which means it will make the water quality for my 37 better.
I’ll tell ya, a person should only get a fish tank if they have the time and energy and know how to keep it up. I do a lot of reading and asking for advice because while I have the time and energy I could use some help on the know how. It’s been fun learning do’s and don’t. I can tell you this much, don’t make the mistake of thinking a large tank is a showpiece with low maintenance cause fish are anything but low maintenance. However, I do enjoy it so no complaints here.
I know I’m going to be mad at myself later in the month but that’s okay. I got my tank at a seriously discounted price off craigslist and I’m a happy camper. Thank goodness both Gus and Bella have everything they need for the month or I never would have gotten the aquarium. Both of them are doing just fine….me? Well, I’m teetering on okay and not okay. I let myself lay down and snuggle with Gus and drop a few tears earlier but that didn’t’ last long because Gus used his gigantic sand paper tongue to lick my salty tears. He about licked my eyeball right out of the socket trying to taste the salt. At one point I wasn’t sure if I was crying because I was sad or because it hurt. One thing about Gus is, he’s a true snuggler. When we lay down he always wants to hold my paw. I put my hand on the bed and he puts his paw right on top of it and leaves it there. It’s the sweetest thing ever.
Not so sweet is Bella during the winter months. Man that girl is down right evil during the winter. All she wants to do is curl up and be left alone. As soon as the sun comes out for longer periods of time she’s back to her regular bad attitude but you let it get cold and the girl is evil.
So that’s an update for the Austin house of fish and fur.
It’s 5am and I should have been in bed soooo long ago.
later tater,
Me
Note: I purchased a 50 gallon aquarium not a 37 gallon as I originally thought. Dimensions – 36 x 19 x 20

I bought my daughter a one fish (beta) tank. I’m hoping she likes it well enough that I can justify a larger tank. It is so relaxing. Even the baby likes it too.
Even if you are mad later in the month, you deserve the gift to yourself. It’s an early Christmas present of sorts. And like Beauty said, $50 is unheard of!
I have some fish tablet (extended release food) that I bought that I can’t use. Let me check the type and if you can use it, I’ll mail it.
I accidentally broke the air stone (a one dollar replacement item) so I went to the pet shop that I frequent to get another one. While there I talked to Sweet who informed me that the tank I have is a tall 50 gallon not a 37 gallon like I was told. I showed her the exact tank and she said it’s what’s called a tall 50g. I feel kinda bad because the guy who sold it to me just wanted it out of his house because he said an old tenant left it behind. He doesn’t know anything about fish at all so he just wanted it gone. I think if he’d known the actual size and what they cost without all the extras he would have charged me more than fifty bucks. I’m not going to call him and tell him but I do feel sort of bad. After I get finished feeling bad I’ll enjoy the tank again. I should be finished shortly. I’m just sort of like,…. wow…… I thought it looked bigger but ya know I guess I thought 50′s were longer. Who knew they came in tall? I guess I know now huh?

Hi,
If he really wanted to do the work to find out what it was worth, he would have, but didn’t, so that was his choice, to just get rid of it. You did a good job of getting a great price. Good for you. Good and healing thoughts to you and your household.
