Sleeping With A Pacifier

I’m an adult yet when I sleep I need comfort, security, peace. For a few weeks now I’ve wanted a pacifier while sleeping. I know what kind I want too. I don’t want the baby kind. I want one slightly larger with a harder plastic than what children use. I just want to curl up with my face towards the wall, hold my teddy bear and sleep. I don’t even want to use the pacifier. I just want it to sit in my mouth while I fall asleep.

I feel so unprotected sometimes, vulnerable, exposed. By the time I got to sleep I’m not just physically tired but emotionally exhausted. I just want to feel the security of a newborn who depends upon someone else to make everything okay, make everything warm and safe.

I haven’t acted to get a pacifier because I fear if I do I’ll switch and get lost in my head. I fear a little one will come forward and won’t be able to get back. Sometimes they aren’t aware that it’s 2010 and we’re an adult now. They don’t realize we’re safe so they could very well lay there scared with no way to get me back.

The other night Amy Pink was out. She’s 5 years old and has autistic characteristics. She also tends to sway her head back and forth for self soothing and she moves her hands around for the same thing. While in bed she was doing this. Gus was beside us and put his paw on her hand then layed  his head on our arm. It helped her calm down and we were able to get to sleep rather quickly. If I put my hand out in bed he’ll put his paw on my hand but not until the other day did he simply take my hand on his own. His timing was good and much appreciated.

  • Have you heard of a weighted blanket??? These work really well!!

  • No matter how hot it is I want the weight of the blankets. It feels safe. I think that’s one reason I don’t mind that the cat sleeps on my head. I like feeling covered. I’ve not heard of weighted blankets. I’ll have to look that one up.

  • I found a pattern for the weighted blanket. It seems easy enough and pretty standard from what I can see. I looked up several patterns, this one was written clearly. I think I’ll try a little one first.

    This is a PDF file.

I’m a little bit excited right now.
    Thank you Paul.

  • Let me know how the weighted blankets work. I’ve wanted one but they are expensive. I might could sew one though.

I sleep with extra blankets and when it’s really bad, a stuffed dog too. I also suck my thumb. It’s kind of like my pacifier. You’d think jaw surgery would have stopped the thumb sucking, but nope, it hasn’t.

I hope your blanket turns out well.

  • I was thinking about adding the weights between two blankets. It seems like it would be easier that way for me. I don’t know. I’m going to have to think of how to do it.

  • I can’t sew but do have a weighted blanket ans love it! I purchased from a place call DreamCatcher Weighted Blankets. They give a blanket away each month, you can enter at their website. http://www.weightedblanket.net.

  • Go get the pacifier. If you look online, you can find a Nuk 5. Our youngest little sleeps far easier with a pacifier, and it calms her when she’s front. It’s also effective for our age slider, who’s front a lot.

  • Hi Rebecca,
I did buy the pacifier but I felt really stupid with it in my mouth. I put it in my drawer and left it there. It seems fine just having it.

I looked up the type of pacifier you were mentioned because I hadn’t heard of it before. Heck, who knew there were adult pacifiers for therapeutic purposes. That’s very cool.

Thanks for your comment and experience.
    Faith
