I’m doing this for me

The question has arisen: It’s been eighteen years, does it still feel the same as when you first started observing this day? Answer: No, it feels better each year.

So why do I observe February 2nd of each year? I observe it because I made it out of there. I lived through it and went on to work towards thriving. Too many survivors didn’t make it out alive or made it out with scars that left them without human compassion or the ability to connect to any living thing. I made it out with my heart which seemed impossible to do under the circumstances. Another reason I observe this day is that too many, way too survivors died without us knowing their name, without us knowing their struggles so I take a moment each February 2nd to honor them.

Each year that passes that I stay away from that family I say loud and clear, “It’s over. You can’t hurt me anymore.” Each year that passes I get stronger and stronger and the resolve is harder to break. February 2nd is a moment of pride because I managed something I was never prepared for. I managed something I was told I could never do but here I am, 18 years later living.

Self Talk

You’re going to be just fine. If you need to start your day off with a few tears then do so.

Remember that your to do list doesn’t say it all has to be done today. Split it up, do what you can and ignore the inner voice that tells you just how much you’ve let things fall to the way side. That voice isn’t important right now If need be, make fun of that voice. Tell him he talks funny.

Get a good meal in you and maybe even eat it by the window. If you can’t afford fresh flowers on your table remember you’ve got art skills, paint ‘em. Painting a flower a day might even be helpful.

ONE

I remember this one. The first time I heard it I thought of myself, not of wars with guns but of life at home.
When I hear this song as an adult I can’t help but see the dissociative me, the one who can’t remember things, the one who isn’t sure if she’s awake or asleep but is certainly aware of pain.

Below is what’s being said by the doctor about the young soldier. This part isn’t sung in the song but is absolutely worth noting.

Annoyingly Cheerful Personality Disorder (ACPD)

News Room / FDA Approves Depressant Drug For The Annoyingly Cheerful

Positive people don’t annoy me but excessively chipper people do. You know the type -  they whistle a tune as they skip down the street wearing those rose colored glasses. You know the type.  This video from The Onion shows such individuals are sick and in need of medication. They stress that it’s time to erase the stigma of getting  perky people help. I think we should take part in this movement to make all excessively cheerful people normal by helping to destroy the cheer they feel. We should counteract their rays of sunshine with  disparaging comments and attacks on their person. They’re sick and it’s for their own good.  It’ll be difficult but with persistent negative feedback for everything they say, we as a community can assist with bringing everyone around us down. If these measures fail we can always just drug the happy people with this promising new medication called Despondex. Despondex may help relieve symptoms of Annoyingly Cheerful Personality Disorder (ACPD).

I’m Gonna Smile

When I there’s nothing inside to make me smile I search outside. Here’s one of the places I go to find my smile. Puppets In Motion is an absolute blast. The puppets sing all sort of songs and well, so well you might forget a puppet is performing. Watch the hand movements, the manner of dress, the body expression. The people who put these puppets in motion are pure genius.

The song this little guy sings is of course sad but he’s quite talented and I scream like a little school girl every time he performs. Not only can he sing All By Myself by John Barrowman but he sings songs by Coldplay and John Lennon with the same “Oh I so love you” reaction. Did I mention he’s fluent in Greek?

Check out his ear ring!! He’s too cute. Continue reading ‘I’m Gonna Smile’
