The CDC has already suggested that the elderly and people with a compromised immune system should stay home. I’m primarily homebound but I do go to the doctor and grocery store, that’s really it. I think Walmart is a breading ground for all sorts of infectious diseases, not just potentially COVID – 19 so I’m staying away from large crowded areas like that.
I’d be lying if I said I’m not a tad worried. I live in an apartment building that houses the hardest hit group, the elderly. Though Indiana only has 2 positive patients, I’m still concerned about contracting the virus.
For these concerns I’ve decided to implement a cleaning procedure that I got by way of suggestion from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Before and after each meeting we wipe down everything. At home now, I wipe everything down once a day. Why? As I said, I’m in a high risk group and live in a high risk building of elderly people. It’s not a nursing home but there are plenty of aides here and elderly people.
I now have a Sunday aide which means I have an aide 7 days a week coming in. These 3 young aides have a lot of contact with others so it’s important to wipe down the apartment every single day.
I’m going to store 2 weeks of food and supplies for myself and my cat, no more than 2 weeks. I’m not trying to stock pile. So far I need a few additional items like cat food and I’ll feel ready to stay at home full time if necessary.
I still participate in volunteer work which includes mailing out handwritten letters to other homebound people. The CDC has suggested that people not lick mailing envelopes but instead moisten them some other way. I’m going to use a small sponge to close the envelopes. Licking them could potentially spread the virus through saliva.
So that’s what I’m doing. Daily wipe down. No licking envelopes. Two weeks worth of supplies for me and the cat and paying attention to direction from the CDC. Hopefully we can get through this frightening time unscathed.
