I’m brand spanking new at clay works, especially polymer clay, boy is it different than natural clay. Seeing as how I don’t have a kiln then polymer is my next best option.

About 4 months ago my physical therapist suggested I build hand strength by working with clay. I was unable to start with clay but I did start with play dough and work my way up. Clay is great physical therapy and a great creative tool.

Seeing as how I like to change things up a bit I decided against using store bought stones but instead found small rocks from outside to place in the pendant bezel. Fun, fun, fun. All of these are hand painted and hand formed and all were a total blast right to the end.

The Rose

This high texture piece was incredibly fun. I started off by treating watercolor paper by alternating between water sprays and white spray paint. I then painted the mountain with a gold tip. Before it was completely dry I pressed the entire painting against a dry sheet of paper. This press is how I was able to get an earthy texture. The last thing I did was add the rose in full bloom at the mountain’s summit.

Stressed Clay Sunflower Ornament

This is a hand formed clay rectangle ornament with a single sunflower painted in oils. The ornament is about 4 inches by 2.5 inches with a half inch thickness making this solid and of a good weight. It has a stressed/aged feel and is accented with a light blue sky and green grass.

The ornaments are easier to make than they are to photograph.

There’s a little egg shaped child, with big brown eyes, dressed in purple, standing by sunflowers. She calls herself Petunia.

Spring of Youth in watercolor

Spring of Youth was created on watercolor paper with ink, crayola crayons and crayola markers. In addition to the stated media there are small details completed in pigmented glue.

The painting shows a little girl with big blue river like eyes walking through a field/forest while carrying and infant. There are two huge full sunflowers, small vines and small daisy flowers around her. She has a tree growing from her black hair and her arms are made of wood, her clothes made of sack cloth.

Tulips To Music

Tulips To Music is part of my Flower A Day Project.

On a canvas sheet I printed the music to the song Beautiful by Christina Aguilera. I then painted open tulips in oils, added a few minor details digitally and viola, there you have it, “Tulips To Music.”

One of the details I appreciate about this painting is the hint of a heart in the clouds above the flowers. The oils used really make this painting shine. They were a gift that has been much appreciated.

Spring may be far off but flowers are forever when planted on canvas.

Watch Over Our Children

It usually doesn’t take me 7 or 8 days to complete one painting but it looks like this one will need even more time. Seven days now but I’m getting closer.

The painting shows a young African-American child walking through a field of sunflowers and wildflowers while being guided by an older Black angel.
Painting Details: The sky and flowing water meet and roll around her skirt into a field of flowers. There are two small butterflies floating above a sunflowers, one single white daisy. The child has small green leaves as trim for her clothing and is holding a tiny little flower.

I believe the final version will make a slight distinction between the sky and water. I may also add a few tiny details to the adult angel but other than that Watch Over Our Children is nearly completed.

Update:

Ah yes, it sometimes takes awhile but the end result is worth it.

The colors have been changed dramatically as were the flowers but I like this version best.

Single White Bloom

“Single White Bloom” is for the Flower a Day Project.

The flower was painted in oils in my 4 x 4 sketchbook. There’s something personal and maybe even romantic about a single stem. I think I like them better than a bouquet not just for a painting but on my kitchen table as well.

Completed – Tea at My House

The original sketch was done in watercolor but this painting done on 9 x 12 acid free paper is mixed media. In addition to heavily pigmented oil paints I used ink, silk flowers and white lace giving the painting a real life touch. Each silk flower is dotted with metallic gold paint, each white bubble is circled with blue metallic paint.

You’ll see the stems glow in three layers of green on top of a swirling blue background. The tea pot itself is gold, brown and copper tones with a large pink and white flower. A closer look at the lace reveals bits of purple, pink and different shades of blue. This is a homey painting that would fit nicely in your kitchen or dining area.

More details: Tea at My House is sealed to help preserve the vibrancy of the paint. It is signed and dated on the front. There’s a white boarder which allows for framing making the image size a full 8 x 10 inches.

Flower A Day

I’m enjoying my flower sketches before dinner. I’ll absolutely continue them.

This sketch shows a house with a purple petal fence and a huge sunflower as a setting sun over a bronze colored house. The original sketch shows much more detail such as small gold flowers on the house and small blue flowers in the sky and even on the purple fence. To finish off the sketch I added a light filter from photoshop.
